Your baby should be buckled up into an approved, properly installed car seat before you start the car. Keep the seat rear-facing until your child is 20lbs or 1 year old. Never place a car seat in the front seat of a car with a passenger-side airbag.

North Carolina law requires that your children under 8 years of age and weighing less than 80 lbs should use a "Child Restraint Device" while riding in a car. Children between 40 and 80 lbs can use booster seats. Children under 40 pounds are required to use a car seat.

Studies have shown that over 92% of car seats are installed incorrectly. There are many ways to ensure that your child's car seat is properly installed.

1. Safe Kids of Charlotte Mecklenburg hosts many events where they offer to check your child's car seat safety.

2. Make sure your car seat has not been recalled.

3. Mecklenburg EMS Agency coordinates parent car seat classes at each of the Mecklenburg County hospitals which offer labor & delivery services. This 2-hour class is taught by a Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. The class will help parents understand which car seats are appropriate for their child as well as to learn the installation process.
